Semaglutide
Clinical evidence — Human trial data existsWhat it is
A GLP-1 receptor agonist. The same molecule is an approved prescription medicine for type-2 diabetes and weight management, but pharmacy versions are prescribed, titrated and monitored by clinicians.
Semaglutide is a long-acting GLP-1 receptor agonist: it slows gastric emptying and signals satiety. As a licensed medicine it is started low and titrated slowly under medical supervision precisely because appetite and glucose effects are dose-sensitive.
Research context
Studied in relation to:
- Appetite reduction
- Weight management
- Blood-glucose control
Points in its favour in the literature:
- Very strong human clinical evidence for the licensed drug
- Well-characterised mechanism
- Large documented outcome data under medical care
Caveats and unknowns:
- Research-grade material is not the monitored pharmacy product
- Nausea and GI effects are common
- Requires medical titration and monitoring
- Serious risk if mis-dosed
Handling & reference data
Route in published researchSubcutaneous injection is the route most commonly described in the research literature. Once-weekly in clinical use.
Reported half-life~7 days (once-weekly dosing)
Published clinical / research context (not instructions)Licensed medicines start ~0.25 mg once weekly and titrate slowly over weeks toward 1–2.4 mg weekly.
Storage (lyophilised)Lyophilised (freeze-dried) powder: refrigerate at 2–8 °C short-term, or freeze at −20 °C or below for long-term storage. Keep sealed and out of light.
Reconstituted solutionOnce reconstituted: keep refrigerated (2–8 °C), protect from light, do not freeze. With bacteriostatic water, commonly used within ~4 weeks; with plain sterile water, within ~24–48 h.
Worked reconstitution example (arithmetic only)e.g. 5 mg vial + 2 mL bacteriostatic water → 2.5 mg/mL (2500 mcg/mL).
