How to Store Research Peptides: Temperatures, Shelf Life & Mistakes to Avoid

Lyophilised research peptides are stable when kept cold and dry — but a few common handling errors quietly degrade them. Here's the plain-English reference.

The short version

Why storage matters

Peptides are short chains of amino acids. In their freeze-dried (lyophilised) state they are chemically stable, which is why they're shipped as a dry powder under vacuum. The moment they meet moisture, heat or repeated temperature swings, the molecule can begin to break down — and once degraded, no amount of careful handling downstream will restore it. Good storage is simply about keeping the compound in the state it arrived in until the moment of use.

Handling the dry vial on arrival

The five most common storage mistakes

  1. Freeze–thaw cycles. Repeatedly warming and re-freezing a vial is the single most common cause of degradation. Store it at one temperature and disturb it as little as possible.
  2. Leaving solutions at room temperature. Once reconstituted, a peptide belongs in the fridge — not on the bench.
  3. Storing in direct light. Keep vials dark; the fridge door is the worst spot (light and temperature swings).
  4. No labels. Always mark the compound, concentration and date — an unlabelled vial is a guessing game.
  5. Ignoring the compound's own notes. Some peptides have specific requirements; check the profile rather than assuming.
